The Louisville Angel Investor Network was formed by Growth Services in September 2007 after a 12 month planning process and held its first investment meeting on March 19, 2008. Partners in this process included MetaCyte Business Labs (a subsidiary of the University of Louisville Research Foundation), Capital Innovations (a local private placement agent), The Enterprise Corporation (a division of Greater Louisville Inc., the metro chamber of commerce), and several local angel investors. The Angel Capital Association also provided substantial assistance throughout the planning process.
The group seeks investment opportunities, in startup or existing companies, with management teams that are focused on growth and offer the potential for superior investment returns. Opportunities can be in any industry sector and from any location, with a preference for industry sectors that are well-understood by at least one member of the group. The group will also consider opportunities to invest in private equity funds.
The group currently has fifteen members and primarily recruits ‘super-accredited’ individuals to join. Investment decisions are made by each individual. A sidecar fund is not anticipated at this time.
Members get a “first-look” at area-based start-up companies. The group also saves valuable time of its members by using a manager to:
- Receive and screen all inquiries and business plans,
- Conduct initial due diligence and offer a summary to members,
- Market to and work with companies on their plans and presentations,
- Arrange group meetings to review the most interesting opportunities and
- Coordinate further diligence and follow-up meetings for interested investors.
